Discounts: Everything You Need to Know

Available for Hub Inventory Small, Midsized, and Huge licenses.

Introduction

You can manage the discounts for your Products on MarketRock by applying them either directly to a single Product or to the Price List.

Discounts can be expressed as a fixed amount or a percentage.

First, it’s important to note that every Discount impacts two aspects of the sale:

  • the value at which the Product is sold
  • how the Price is displayed on the Distribution Channel (e.g., "original price" and "strikethrough price")

How a discounted Price appears on the Distribution Channel depends on the display policies of the respective Distribution Channel.

Since applying a Discount affects one or more Distribution Channels, this topic is particularly delicate and requires detailed explanation, which is the purpose of this article.

We will cover the following topics in this order:

Applying a Discount

To apply a Discount to a Product, you can follow two different methods, just like for any Price modification:

  • Through the Product View. Select the Product you want to modify, click on the gear icon for Edit, and go to the Availability tab. Here you can add the Discount.

  • Through the Price List View. To modify the Discount in a specific Price List, click on Settings > Price Lists. Then select the Price List you want to view from the drop-down menu under "You are operating on." At this point, you can modify the Discount for the relevant Products, using filters if necessary. There is no save button: click anywhere on the screen to apply the Price change.

Applying a Discount in Bulk

If you need to apply Discounts in bulk, you can do so through the Product View by using the Simple Import feature. This feature allows you to modify Products precisely, for example, when you have an Excel file with Products and their respective Discounts listed. Details can be found in this article.

Using the "Discount/increase Price List prices" function available in the Price List screen allows you to increase or decrease the Price of all Products in a Price List but does not populate the Discount field.

Displaying Discounts on Amazon

On Amazon, the discount policy is unique and can determine whether a Product's "strikethrough price" is visible. The platform reviews discounted Prices to verify the authenticity of the Discounts offered.

Amazon uses a specific algorithm to assess whether the application of a Discount is legitimate or potentially the result of Price manipulation by the seller. When Amazon's system detects that the Discount application is genuine, the "strikethrough price" is displayed.

However, if the Discount is deemed illegitimate—perhaps because the Product Price was previously increased before applying the Discount—Amazon will show the net discounted Price without the "strikethrough price."

For example, suppose I sell a Product at a Price of €10 but increase it to €12 a week before a sale, then apply a fixed discount of €2 during the sale. In such a case, Amazon might not display the "strikethrough price," as the system detects the Price change before the Discount and may interpret this as an attempt to mislead consumers about the actual value of the Discount.

In conclusion, the presence or absence of the "strikethrough price" on Amazon depends on the automated system's careful evaluation to ensure that applied Discounts are genuine and not the result of deceptive strategies by sellers.

Displaying Discounts on eBay

On eBay, applying a Discount is visible through the discounted Price accompanied by a graphical representation of the original strikethrough Price.

For example, if I list a Product with a regular Price of €10 and decide to apply a 20% Discount, the offer on the site will show the original Price of €10 followed by the correctly displayed "discounted Price."

Displaying Discounts on Shopify

Shopify includes a concept of Discount that uses the "strikethrough price" associated with a "comparison price."

To apply such a Discount, you must enter both the "comparison price" and the "discounted price."

Inputting a Discount on MarketRock for a Product distributed on Shopify translates to sending the "discounted price" to Shopify. Shopify's system itself calculates the Discount percentage displayed on the site in harmony with the template used.

Displaying Discounts on Zalando

On Zalando, applying a Discount is visible through the discounted Price accompanied by a graphical representation of the original strikethrough Price.

For example, if I list a Product with a regular Price of €10 and decide to apply a 20% Discount, the offer on the site will show the original Price of €10 followed by the correctly displayed "discounted Price."

Displaying Discounts on Distribution Channels Based on the Mirakl Platform (Yoox, Leroy Merlin, Decathlon, ePrice, etc.)

On Marketplaces based on the Mirakl platform, applying a Discount is visible through the discounted Price accompanied by the graphical representation of the original strikethrough Price.

When a Discount is applied on MarketRock, the offers are sent and the Discount is displayed as indicated on MarketRock.
